Step Eight: Drawing Curves with Uneven Direction Handles - Techniques Introduced in Flash CS3

In the previous section you created curves that were smooth. In this section you will learn how to create curves that have sharp corners rather than smooth corners:

Important Note: The technique described here were introduced in Flash CS3 and will not work in earlier versions!!

The difference is in the direction handles:

In the smooth curve the direction handles are the same length on both sides of the anchor point:

Direction Handles are an even length.

With the sharper cornered curve the direction handles are not the same length:

Direction Handles are uneven lengths.

Example: Download the Flash Drawing Template  Draw 224g  (Uneven Direction Handles)

  1. With the Pen Tool click on click and hold onto: Point 1
  2. Drag to and release at: Point 2
  3. Click and hold onto: Point 3
  4. Drag to and release at: Point 4

The Direction Handles are still the same length.

In this next stage you will need to hover your cursor over Point 3 so that you can see the little Convert Icon (an upside down V shape: ) just to the right side of the Pen Tool:

Note: This convert option is not available in Flash before version CS3

  5. Hover your Pen Tool over: Point 3
    Click
    and hold onto: Point 3
Drag to and release at: Point 5

Note: If you change the angle of the Direction Line the arc will change too:

This is not what I am wanting you to do, I simply want you to change length of the Direction Line:

If you change the length of the Direction Line you will not see any change. This is because this length is associated with the next section of the curve that you have yet to draw! So you cannot actually see what you are doing! So you have to guess! What you will need to remember is:

    • Short Direction Lines create sharp corners
    • Long Direction Lines create smooth corners
  6. Click and hold onto: Point 6
  7. Drag to and release at: Point 7
  8. Click and hold onto: Point 6
Drag to and release at: Point 8
  9. Click and hold onto: Point 9
  10. Drag to and release at: Point 10
  11. Click and hold onto: Point 9
Drag to and release at: Point 11
  12. This time the Direction Handle is dragged further away from the original position:

  13. Click and hold onto: Point 12
  14. Drag to and release at: Point 13
  15. To finish the line: Ctrl Click
